SJ was founded in 2017 by Joy and Lyall – two corporate professionals who became frustrated with the process (or lack thereof) of finding more sustainable brands that aligned with their values. Amber joined the team in 2018 and has been a core (read: essential) member since. Today she manages all of SJ’s content and many of our brand relationships.
In addition to this core team, we have a wonderful team of writers, virtual assistants and tech support who help make Sustainable Jungle what it is. We are most grateful to this exceptional group of passionate people.

Joy has been passionate about the environment since childhood in South Africa, where she was surrounded by the wonders of nature. Enraged by the devastating impact of palm oil, she co-founded Sustainable Jungle with her husband Lyall in 2017. She later launched the Sustainable Jungle Podcast, interviewing changemakers from around the world. Alongside SJ, Joy has built a corporate career in auditing, management consulting, and most recently climate investing across Asia Pacific. Today, her focus is using her compliance and reporting skills to lead SJ’s Brand Ratings, helping to define what meaningful sustainability looks like in real life and business. When she’s not working on SJ, you can find her swimming in the ocean, running the trails, gardening, or trying to teach her young son about the importance of nature — before inevitably relenting and playing superheroes.
